ALBE - ALternative Biomasses for Elastomers

Alternative lignocellulosic biomasses for the development of elastomers, presented by the Italian Cluster for Green Chemistry SPRING CTN01_00063 (National Technological Clusters, Directorial Decree 30/05/2012 prot. 257/Ric).

Abstract

The project aims to innovate the production of synthetic elastomers (SE) and natural rubber (NR), covering all aspects of the rubber industry and in particular that of tires: from the use of alternative renewable raw materials to fossil ones, such as bio-butadiene in the production of SE, the source of NR suitable for growth in the Italian regions and an alternative to that of the Hevea Brasiliensis plantation originating in South-East Asia, the technology of creating a new compound using these alternative rubbers together with vegetable additives that replace the current fossil ones. The production of NR in Italy could change the current situation of importers in Europe, while the plant extender could be the key to greener performance in terms of fuel consumption and safety for the tire industry.
